My Biggest Influence

There are two people that have had a significant impact on my life. The first person would be my Mother. She is my moral compass. Her faith in God is expressed everyday in how she relates to other people and how she deals with the hardships that this life can offer. I will never forget the day and weeks after my brother's funeral. I have never seen such sorrow, such pain on my Mother's face. The month following was filled with tears, laughter, and recollection. That time could have been filled with hatred, blame, and hopelessness. Her sweet spirit is known by everyone that knows her. I cannot count how many times she has been there for me. I remember one time waking her up in the middle of the night, crawling in bed with her, because a guy I loved had completely broken my heart. Or the time I woke her ecstatic over a first kiss. Or the many many times she sat on the sidelines and cheered for me while playing basketball or softball. I will never be able to repay her for everything she has done for me!

The second person that has had the biggest influence on my life is my best friend Shama. We have only known each other for 6 years...but it feels like forever. She is perfect. She is smart, beautiful, funny, talented, confident, sweet, generous, sexy, and athletic...she is the All-American girl. Not only is she the girl every guy dreams about...she is also the best friend I have ever had. I can always count on her to tell me the truth...no matter what, to listen to me prattle on and on about some cute guy that has got my attention, to lend a shoulder to cry on, or lend me money when I am broke. This past year with Jeff has been one roller coaster ride after another...and I came off that ride completely lost...completely broken. Shama was there...there to pick me up...dust me off...and remind me of who I am. She makes me want to be a better person...gives me the courage to be myself...to stand up for what I believe in...and have the confidence to go up to that boy grab him by his shoulders and kiss him like he has never been kissed before. She is my biggest fan! And that means so much because there is no one on this earth that knows me better than she does. She accepts me with all my faults...all my stupid choices...and loves me unconditionally. So...in short...if she had a penis...I would marry her. :)

Taylor Hicks, the 29 year old Birmingham native, won the "American Idol" title Wednesday night in front of a whopping 35.4 million viewers according to Nielson ratings. I congratulate him on a job well done; he was competing against the most talented group of contestants this show has ever seen. Taylor was the only one that stayed out of the bottom 3/2 the entire season. He stayed consistent through out the competition and always stood out, which was necessary in a sea of talent being thrown at us each week. Katharine McPhee, the 22 year old from Sherman Oaks California came in second place.

It has been a long time since I have posted. It has been a busy month for me. First off let me tell you about my trip to New Mexico. I left on a Wednesday and flew to Houston and from Houston I flew to El Paso where Shama was picking me up. My first plane ride was not as stressful as I believed it would be. In fact it was quite easy. Take off was a lot of fun and I was able to sit by myself on each flight. The only problem was with my ears popping, but all in all it was a good experience.

While in New Mexico, I visited Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, the Gila Cliff Dwellings, the City of Rocks and Juarez Mexico. Carlbad caverns is just one of the numerous other caves within the Guadalupe Mountains. The park contains over 100 known caves. Carlsbad Cavern, one of the world's largest underground chambers and countless formations, is accessible via walking tours. I was able to get a couple of neat pictures, but most of them didn’t turn out because it was so dark. We didn’t get to see the bats, they don’t come back until May.

We were not able to drive into White Sands because it was closed, but we got to see the outskirts. It looked like a beach….with no water.

The city of rocks was amazing. “…the city of the rocks, a noted place from the granite rocks rising abruptly out of the ground," wrote James Wilkins in 1849. "They are in a romantic valley clustered together, which gives them the appearance of a city." It was interesting to see a pile of rocks in the middle of this desert land. Tommy said the rocks were all a part of one mountain that had eroded after time and were shaped by volcanic ash 30 million years ago. Rock formations like those at the park exist in only 6 other places in the world. The weather was absolutely beautiful that day. The sky was an incredible shade of blue, with no clouds in the sky. The pictures turned out great.

My favorite of the week was traveling through the mountains to see the cliff dwellings. We had to travel up mountains, at one point we were up 7,000 plus feet above sea level. The terrain is rugged, with steep-sided canyons cut by shallow rivers; forested with ponderosa pine, Gambel's oak, Douglas fir, New Mexico juniper, pinon pine, and alligator juniper. It seemed like we were in West Virginia rather than New Mexico. It was so surreal to look down and see the desert. The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture who lived in the Gila Wilderness from the 1280s through the early 1300s.

Next we went into Mexico. It was not what I imagined. I always pictured it as little cities with red dirt roads, surrounded my adobe huts and Mexicans with sombreros and six shooters drinking Tequila. In fact it didn’t look much different than El Paso. The big difference was the traffic. I never did see any traffic lights. There were some stop signs, which NO ONE bothered with. I would have been a nervous wreck had I been driving. There were people everywhere, playing soccer, softball, and a lot of very empty basketball courts. I guess there aren’t a lot of brothers living in Mexico. We went to the Mercado and ate lunch, or at least tried to. People walked by every 2 minutes to show us jewelry, candy, and assorted knick-knacks. Someone offered to take our picture with an authentic sombrero, little girls dressed up in traditional Mexican dresses begging for coins, and a guy that wanted to shine my friend’s shoes. The customer service was astounding. It made me very grateful for the USA and all its opportunities.

I had such an awesome time! I am very happy I was able to see my best bud Shama and her guy Tommy. They were so sweet to me while I was there, and made sure I had a good time. I can hardly wait to go back!

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so
Many others her age, she considered herself to be a very Liberal
Democrat, and was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch
Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures
that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a
professor, she felt that her father had for many years harbored an
evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher
taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare
programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors
had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded
by asking how she was doing in school. Taken aback, she answered
rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was
tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult
course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time for a
boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she
spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?"

She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy
classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so
popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited
to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for
classes because she's too hung over."

Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's
office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your
friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and
certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily
fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my
grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey
has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked

my tail off!"

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the
Republican Party."

Easy Crispy Chicken

1 pkt. SHAKE 'N BAKE Original Chicken Seasoned Coating Mix
1/3 cup KRAFT Shredded Parmesan Cheese
1/4 cup MIRACLE WHIP Dressing
2 Tbsp. milk

4 small boneless skinless chicken breast halves (1 lb.)

PREHEAT oven to 400°F. Combine coating mix and cheese in pie plate or shallow dish. Mix dressing and milk in separate pie plate or shallow dish.

DIP chicken in dressing mixture, then in coating mixture, turning each piece over to evenly coat both sides. Place on lightly greased baking sheet.

BAKE 20 to 25 min. or until chicken is cooked through (170°F).

LET IT REALLY SINK IN - THEN CHOOSE.
John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"
He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, "I don't get it!
You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
He replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or ... you can choose to be in a bad mood.
I choose to be in a good mood."
Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.
Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or. I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.
"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.
"Yes, it is," he said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood.
You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life."
I reflected on what he said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.
After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.
I saw him about six months after the accident.
When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?"
I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter," he replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or...I could
choose to die. I chose to live."
"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked.
He continued, "..the paramedics were great.
They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed
to take action."
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath
and yelled, 'Gravity'."
Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."
He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.
